Job Description

What began with a single service truck has evolved into a network of six branch locations, a fleet of over 30 mobile service trucks, and robust parts, service and leasing operations.

The Transport Manager will oversee all transport and logistics operations to ensure safe, efficient, cost‑effective movement of goods and/or people. This role involves managing the vehicle fleet, scheduling and routing, compliance, driver supervision, and continuous improvement of processes. The Transport Manager reports to senior management and works closely with maintenance, safety, operations, and customer service teams.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Management

‒ Maintain the vehicle fleet: ensure regular maintenance, safety inspections, repairs, and replacements.

‒ Monitor fuel usage, vehicle utilisation, and wear & tear to optimize operating costs.

Routing and Scheduling

‒ Plan, schedule, and optimise transport routes for efficiency (distance, time, cost).

‒ Coordinate driver assignments, shifts, work hours, leave etc.

‒ Adjust schedules dynamically in response to unexpected events (traffic, vehicle breakdowns, delays).

Compliance & Safety

‒ Ensure compliance with relevant local, national transport, safety and environmental regulations.

‒ Enforce safety policies; conduct driver safety training and performance reviews.

‒ Oversee documentation: driver licenses, permits, insurance, vehicle registration, and related records.

Staff Management

‒ Recruit, train, and supervise drivers, dispatchers, and other transport staff.

‒ Conduct performance evaluations, discipline where necessary, develop staff skills.

Cost Control & Budgeting

‒ Prepare and manage operational budgets: fuel, maintenance, labour, etc.

‒ Monitor transport KPIs (cost per km, cost per trip, fuel efficiency, downtime, driver performance).

‒ Identify opportunities for cost saving (route optimisation, maintenance scheduling, etc.).

Customer Service & Stakeholder Management

‒ Ensure on‑time delivery (goods or scheduled passenger transport) and high service standards.

‒ Handle customer complaints or service disruptions.

‒ Liaise with other departments (operations, maintenance, safety, dispatch) and external vendors/suppliers.

Process Improvement & Reporting

‒ Analyse transport operations data and metrics; identify inefficiencies and implement continuous improvements.

‒ Provide regular reports (daily/weekly/monthly) on fleet performance, safety incidents, costs etc.

Requirements

Education: Diploma or degree in Logistics, Transport Management, Business Administration or a related field.

Experience: Several years (e.g. 3‑5+) in transportation/logistics, with supervisory / management responsibility.

Driver’s licence: valid licence; possibly commercial/transport endorsements depending on region.

Technical skills: Knowledge of route planning software or transport management systems; basic mechanical understanding helpful.

Regulatory knowledge: Understanding of transport safety regulations, licensing, insurance, environmental rules.

Skills: Strong leadership, communication, problem‑solving, decision‑making, organisational, and analytical skills.

Personal attributes: Reliability, attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, adaptability, commitment to safety.

Working Conditions

Office and field work (on the road, at garages, workshops)

May require irregular hours, weekend or on‑call work for emergencies or unexpected transport issues

Travel between depots/sites / customer locations may be required
